Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji
- Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji
(?-1206)
At the head of a band of Khalji adventurers, he entered Bihar around 1197. There he destroyed a large Buddhist monastery, the ruins of which survive at Nalanda. In 1204, he attacked and occupied by surprise Nadia and then Lakhnauti, contributing to the collapse of the Sena dynasty. For this he gained a robe of honor from Aibek. In 1206, Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar led an abortive expedition into the valley of the Brahm-putra River but was forced to withdraw by the fierce resistance of the local rulers. During his retreat from Assam, he was killed by one of his lieutenants, Ali Mardan.
